Here's the latest presentation on the net generation research project. We made this today at the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education conference (CNIE) in Ottawa.

Hi Mark,

I'll be interested to hear about the reception of the presentation. Agreement? Skepticism?

Wouldn't there be a counter argument that the research doesn't support this view of Net Generation because its promoters carry on outside those traditional venues of peer reviewed journals etc. and are drawing their sources from the areas they feel are part of the movement (e.g. social networking sites)? I'm not arguing that myself but wonder if that's ever raised.

Hi Dave:

Overall the reception to our research has been supportive. Many people tell us it's about time somebody questioned the hype. I think a lot of people are uneasy about the Net Gen claims but haven't had the time to assess them.

Your point about net gen supporters operating outside the traditional venues is exactly the problem. The data they use (if they actually have data) is often gathered from people who are already engaged with the technology. As well, most of the well-cited "literature" is from proprietary studies that do not provide methodological details that allow us to assess the quality of the research.
